Why You Should Eat Like the Season: An Ayurvedic Take on Summer Meals
R
Reg NomixWalk through any grocery store in June and you'll see it: watermelons stacked like green cannonballs, baskets of berries, zucchini the size of your forearm, and tomatoes so red they practically glow.
Coincidence? Ayurveda says absolutely not.
Nature produces exactly what your body needs at exactly the right time. Summer's produce is naturally cooling, hydrating, and light — exactly what balances the fiery, intense energy of the season.
**Why summer is Pitta season**
In Ayurvedic thinking, summer is ruled by Pitta dosha — the fire and water element. The sun is intense, the days are long, and your body's internal thermostat is working overtime.
When Pitta gets aggravated (think: too much sun, too little sleep, too many spicy meals), you feel it:
- Irritability that flares up fast
- Skin that's red, sensitive, or breaking out
- Heartburn or acid reflux
- Trouble falling asleep because you're too warm
The fix is simpler than you'd think: eat like the season.
**What to load up on right now**
**Water-rich fruits.** Watermelon, cantaloupe, berries, mangoes, cucumber — these aren't just refreshing, they're literally cooling your system from the inside. I've been having a big bowl of mixed melon and mint for breakfast and it's completely replaced my need for a mid-morning cool-down.
**Leafy greens.** Arugula, spinach, lettuce, cilantro. Bitter and astringent tastes are naturally cooling. A simple salad with lime juice and a pinch of salt beats a heavy cooked lunch every time during a heat wave.
**Coconut everything.** Coconut water, coconut milk in smoothies, fresh coconut in salads. It's one of the most cooling foods in the Ayurvedic pantry — and it tastes like summer.
**What to ease up on**
- **Spicy food** — I know, I know. But chili, cayenne, and even too much ginger can crank up your internal heat. Save the hot sauce for cooler months.
- **Fermented foods** — kimchi, kombucha, and yogurt are great in moderation, but too much can aggravate Pitta.
- **Alcohol** — especially red wine and spirits. If you're drinking, go for something cooling like a crisp white or a spritzer with mint.
**A simple summer routine**
I've been doing this for the last couple weeks and it's made a noticeable difference:
1. Start the day with room-temp water with lime (skip the hot lemon — it's too warming)
2. Eat your biggest meal at lunch when digestion is strongest
3. Have a light dinner — salad or fruit — and eat it before 7 PM
4. Take a short walk after sunset when the air has cooled
5. Go to bed by 10 PM (Pitta types especially need this)
**The bottom line**
You don't need to overhaul your entire diet. Just notice what's in season at the farmers' market and eat more of that, less of the heavy, spicy, fried stuff. Your body already knows what to do — it's been doing this for thousands of years.
